SAESI wants to build resilient communities

JOBURG – Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, founder of the Gift of the Givers foundation, is one of the main speakers at this year’s conference.

Southern African Emergency Services Institute (SAESI) was adamant that its upcoming conference would help build resilient communities.

Addressing exhibitors and media on 30 September at Nasrec in Joburg, Kelly-Ann Prinsloo from SAESI explained that the upcoming conference would include an exhibition and training events.

The institute would host its 30th conference from 1 until 6 November, 44 exhibitors had registered and 2000 visitors were expected to attend.

The conference would commence with a fun run and it would take place at the Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre.

“The fun run will allow delegates and their families to take part in fun events, which help to build a sense of community and allow industry members to interact with each other in an informal setting,” explained Prinsloo.

This year’s theme is Building resilient communities. The institute would bring together government officials, international, regional and civil society organisations, donors, the private sector, academia, and professional associations to play their part in contributing to building disaster resilient communities.

A new feature in this year’s conference– the breakaway sessions – would give visitors a chance to talk about education, risk management, and security and resilience – the three pillars that build resilient communities with Gauteng’s decision-makers.

Identified speakers would provide examples of adversity that affected communities elsewhere and information would be shared on the challenges and solutions which emanated during and after these disasters.

The conference will feature two keynote speakers: Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, founder of the Gift of the Givers foundation, and Stuart Ellis, chief executive officer of the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC).

City of Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi inisited it was important for residents to attend this conference.

Ekurhuleni EMS spokesperson William Ntladi explained they were moving away from reactive to be more proactive and moving to a mode of proactive. “Our main objective is to transform the life of a patient and residents need to understand how they can help during emergency,” he concluded.

Access to all events is included in the conference price of only R6 600 per delegate.
