Elderly man murdered during house robbery

SOPHIATOWN – An elderly woman has been widowed after her husband was stabbed during a house robbery.

An elderly man (71) has died after being stabbed twice during a house robbery in Sophiatown on 30 September.

According to Sophiatown SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn, at about 3am two male suspects entered the home of an elderly couple. The suspects stole the couple’s jewellery and DVDs. During the robbery the man was stabbed twice and has since died.

WO de Bruyn added that according to the couple’s daughter, the woman (73) was throttled. “She did go to hospital for a check and she seems to be okay now,” he said.

No arrests have been made.

Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch chairperson Dauw Steyn said, “We condemn this senseless killing and urge anyone that has any information with regard to the murder to come forward. Our elderly are treasures and needs to be protected. SAPS cannot do this alone and we need everyone to get involved.”

This is the second reported murder due to stabbing in Sophiatown in September. A man was stabbed several times on Sol Street on 14 September, and died afterwards.

Also, a man was shot eight times and died at Westpark Cemetery while mourning at his mother’s grave on 26 September.
