Drug related crimes on the rise

BRIXTON – Drug related crimes in the Brixton Precinct increased by 72.3 per cent.

Drug-related crimes in the Brixton SAPS precinct increased by 72.3 per cent in the financial year 2014/15 as revealed by the latest crime statistics.

45 cases of hijacking were reported in this station, highlighting how rife this crime has become in that area compared to the previous year.

Common robbery leads the list in contact crimes followed by murder, sexual offences, and then attempted murder.

Meanwhile in Fairland SAPS precinct most crimes dropped compared to the previous financial year. However, hijacking was the highest with eight cases reported. Robbery at residential premises was a worrying criminal trend and had increased by 7.7 per cent.

Theft out of motor vehicle remained a concerning crime trend in the Linden SAPS precinct. This crime has increased by 21.1 per cent. Although there is a significant drop in other crimes compared to the previous year, burglary in residential premises increased by 20.8 per cent with 116 cases reported.

Moving to Parkview SAPS precinct, hijacking increased by 12 per cent. This means that in this financial year 12 cases of this nature were reported. Robbery at residential premises in this precinct was prevalent, as it had increased by 23.5 per cent.

Only three murder incidents were reported at Parkview while 308 cases of assault with aggravating circumstances were reported, with an increase of 12.8 per cent.

Other contact crimes such as common assault, common robbery and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm dropped.

45 cases of hijacking were reported in Sophiatown SAPS precinct in this financial year alone. While murder dropped by 5.9 percent, attempted murder increased by 3.6 per cent.

Gauteng Community policing Forum (CPF) chairperson Andy Mashaile explained that the statistics were shocking. “They instil fear in the community. Their feeling of safety is no more and this however, leads residents to resort to mob justice,” he concluded.
