Greyson climbs Kilimanjaro for his community

FAIRLANDS – Keanan Greyson will celebrate his 13th birthday on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Keanan Greyson (12) from Laerskool Fairland is excited about his adventure – reaching the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.

This grade seven pupil will celebrate his 13th birthday on 4 October climbing the mountain along with his grandparents Stef and Inamarie Greyson, his cousin Herman and uncles Willem van Heerden and FC Truter.

The youngest one in the group was promised by his grandparents 10 years ago that they would take him with them when he turned 13. “Now their dream has become my dream,” Keanan said.

Greyson is climbing the mountain as a tribute to (Vriende van Fairland) Friends of Fairland, a school committee that aides underprivileged children, and as a gesture of gratitude towards Laerskool Fairland.

“I am a very privileged child here in Fairland and I just want to give to other children that do not have that privilege,” he said.

The total cost of this journey was funded by his family and the school urged various companies to support this charitable cause by making voluntarily donations.

“My slogan for the mountain will be just do it,” he said.

Every Monday he briefs the pupils at the school about his trip’s progress teaches pupils the interesting facts of the mountain. Pupils have been given stickers to wear to create awareness about the campaign.

Friends of Fairland committee aides underprivileged families to ensure the children were happy irrespective of their background. “The families do not get exposed. We also assist when children need doctors and we also provide therapy during school hours,” explained Leanie Taljaard from the committee.
