Fibre is coming to Linden

LINDEN – Fibre optics are explained by Ward councillor and residents' associations.

Residents in Linden will soon get connected faster than ever with fibre optic cabling.

Linden Community Association (LCA) chairperson, Estee Jamieson said, “The LCA is currently undertaking the massive task of converting a suburb of nearly 3 000 houses to a proactive security initiative. In order for these proactive companies to work effectively they have indicated that they would need fibre in the area to run their security systems.”

Companies in Linden have asked Vumatel to lay the cables and connect the houses. Each home will have a box installed on the exterior wall – in the case of a complex the box will be shared between residents. Vumatel has undertaken the task of digging up the sidewalks to install the cables which are then connected to every box.

Jamieson commented, “Residents will be affected by the trench digging in the streets as well as across driveways, but Vumatel have assured us that they have plenty of experience in these issues and make a huge effort to avoid any major delays or incidents that might occur.”

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck oversaw the first suburb (Parkhurst) that have had installation of fibre by Vumatel. He explained, “Think of Vumatel as the highway. They build and construct the roads. They then give the driver a choice to drive whichever car they want.” The car for example is the internet service provider.

Truluck said, “Parkhurst was one of the first areas to get Vumatel – it is fantastic and we are so happy.” He explained the resident can choose the speed of internet they want and that determines the cost. “But even the very slowest connection is more than suitable for my needs,” said Truluck.

According to Jamieson the project will commence as of 28 September and should take about four months to finish. Linden will be divided into section or tranches, where each section is completed before moving onto the next. The date of completion will be made available by 1 October. “We will all get access to high speed internet as well as the benefit of having the most effective security system. Property prices are also said to increase as more people are looking to purchase properties that have fibre installed in the area.”
