GALLERY: Nurses memorial home receives renovation

NORTHCLIFF – Caro House is given a makeover.

Caro House recently received an extensive renovation – thanks to local residents Carol and Kevin Burrow. Caro House, which is a South African nurses war memorial home in Northcliff, held a lunch on 19 September to say thank you to the couple. The lunch was held in good spirits, with residents enjoying a fine three-course meal.

“Nurses are not very popular at the moment and old people are certainly not popular,” trustee Trudy Nicol said to all in attendance. “But the home is here for nurses who have nursed 40–50 years ago, and we are so grateful for what you [the Burrow couple] gave us.”

The home accommodates 40 residents, and its renovations included extensive re-tiling, painting and carpeting, and the installation of curtains, blinds and furniture. “We looked so tired before this,” explained matron Angie Gyngell, adding that before the renovation, the ceiling was falling down in the bathroom and furniture was decades old.

Carol said, “Every week I visited my friend and I was sad at how this place was looking, The Lord laid it on my heart to help you. From the bottom of my heart I am very glad to have helped.” Kevin spoke about his grandmother who was a theatre sister, and how nursing can affect family life negatively. “I understand the hardship you have been through and it was a pleasure I could help.”
