Roosevelt Substation catches fire again

ROOSEVELT PARK –The substation in Roosevelt Park caught fire for the second time.

The Roosevelt Substation in Roosevelt Park caught fire for the second time in four months at 11.15am on 18 September.

CityPower spokesperson Sydney Mphahlele said the fire occurred due to a cable fault.

He said City Power technicians were dispatched to the substation immediately and isolated the part of the substation that was affected.

Mphahele said about 80 per cent of the areas that were initially affected have been restored by 12.45pm but some areas areas still experiencing a power outage.

“Areas that are still affected are some parts of Northcliff, Berario and Blackheath,”said Mphahlele

He further stated technicians are currently restoring the remaining 20 per cent.

Ward 88 councillor Pat Richards said the firemen from the Roosevelt Fire Brigade heard a big bang and felt the earth shaking when the explosion occurred.

She said they rushed outside and saw a small smouldering fire.

Roosevelt Park Fire Brigade could not be reached for comment at the time.

Fire engines from Randburg and Rosebank also came to assist in putting out the fire and cooling the area down afterwards.

Richards said she has requested City Power to build a new sub-station as the current one is unreliable and holds danger.
