Tennis development programme for Vuleka High

BLAIRGOWRIE – Tennis Academy of Excellence educates and helps through tennis.

Pupils of Vuleka SSB High School and St Peter’s Child Care are set to develop their tennis skills through practice.

Susan Elder, her husband James and her son Robert – founders of Tennis Academy of Excellence, have created a community development programme at the Blairgowrie Tennis Club.

“We have a one-year user license whereby we hope to grow and further our community development programme,” said Elder.

The programme is aimed at teaching children tennis.

It is hoped that children will not only be coached but also helped develop their emotional state.

“Many children from the St Peter’s homes are orphans of HIV/Aids, or vulnerable children. The house-mother has noticed a considerable difference in their personalities,” said St Peter’s Child Care social services and manager, Adelaide Mangena.

She added, “We wanted to try a new form of therapy for these children as the conventional methods were not working. By learning how to play tennis, these children are able to talk about their problems in an informal environment.”

Principal of Vuleka SSB High School Lizbé Pieters commented, “We have introduced a compulsory sports period for the children on a Wednesday. Some of these pupils have never even picked up a tennis racket or even been on a tennis court – this is a great way for them to experience a different part of the outside world.”

Other representatives attended the publicity day on 2 September such as Ward 99 councillor Bruce Herbert, City of Joburg Region B Sports Victor Mompati and Sarél Naudé, Community Development and Randburg stadium manager.

The attendees agreed that this project is one that both benefits the community and further helps the development of children.

Jed Kemery, chairperson of the Blairgowrie Community Association (BCA) said, “This venue has been in less than perfect conditions in the past. It is an important part of the Blairegowrie community and we are happy to see it go to good use.”

The programme is in desperate need of tennis shoes, rackets and balls for the children.
