EFF takes Wits to court

BRAAMFONTEIN – EFF wants university professor out.

The EFF has accused Wits University Professor and principal Adam Habib of being irresponsible and making ridiculous decisions.

EFF acting national spokesperson Fana Mokoena claimed Prof Habib is sidelining the students who are members of EFF.

“The ANC and their cohorts in the form of Habib will not derail us. Habib must go,” said Mokoena in his statement.

EFF’s comments follow the South Gauteng High Court ruling that the suspension of the EFF students be lifted.

Mokoena said EFF welcomes the ruling of the court.

“We also note that the only reason the judge, according to his statement, could not rule in our favour that our candidates be allowed back in the election process is because he felt they would have been disadvantaged for the loss of time caused by these senseless sanctions by the Vice-Chancellor Adam Habib,” said Mokoena.

He added, “We are vexed by the irresponsible conduct of Habib in the manner he has prejudiced the EFF in the political life of Wits.”

Mokoena said to this end, Habib has achieved his objective.

Prof Habib [www.wits.ac.za/]said an application was brought before the court on 27 August by the national leadership of the EFF against the university for an interim interdict.

This was after the university had suspended their students, who are members of the EFF, after a violent incident at the university where they also interrupted the SRC elections.

Prof Habib said, “On 28 August the court found that the SRC elections should continue, and that the prohibition of the Wits EFF candidates from contesting in the 2015 SRC elections should remain in place.”

He said the university is appreciative of this ruling and the SRC elections will continue as planned.

He added that the court further found that the suspension of students from the university should be set aside and the disciplinary procedures for these individuals should be convened within 10 days.

“We are more than willing to comply with the time stipulation regarding the disciplinary procedures but we disagree with the ruling regarding the lifting of the suspensions, given that the evidence suggests that these students broke the Code of Conduct for students, by engaging in threatening or physical altercations, and the fact that the university has an obligation to protect the safety and security of its students, staff and visitors. However, the university will respect the decision of the court,” concluded Prof Habib.
