Wits Theatre and Wits School of Arts presented Frailty on 26 August at the Chamber of Mines Building.
The theatre production is a dialogue based on 14 different Shakespearean plays with a modern and humorous twist.
Shakespeare enthusiasts, students and parents gathered to watch the theatre production that took place at three separate venues for each scene.
Frailty is a combination of stories based on the lives of greatest characters and it is directed by Sarah Woodward. She explained that her motive behind the story was to find out why her students find Shakespeare boring, and she said although his dialogue may be complicated but it is definitely not boring.
“I wanted to take the audience on a literary as well as an actual journey. I also wanted to give the students the opportunity to work in a non-conventional space,” Woodward explained.
Woodward added that she wanted to explore the female characters of Shakespeare and thought that using three scenic devices would be the most effective way to do so.
“The first scene represents the public and social moment, the second scene depicts betrayal and madness, the third scene explores desire, sex and death,” she said.
Claire Rahme’s daughter Taylor is part of the Shakespeare production and she was there to support her.
“I found the whole production entertaining, especially the modern take on Shakespeare that’s done in a way for the younger generation to understand the dialogue in the play,” Rahme said.
