Call to oppose demarcation

CONSTANTIA KLLOF – Residents have until 3 September to object to the proposed demarcation of wards.

Communities of wards 85, 89 and 97 have until 3 September to object to the demarcation of suburbs in those wards by the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB).

An objection form can be downloaded from Ward 89 website.

As it stands, suburbs such as Constantia Kloof, Cranville, Floracliffe, Helderkruin, Horizon Park, Horizon View, Kloofendal, Ontdekkers Park, and Princess 1, 9 and 6 fall under Ward 85.

Ward 89 comprises of the following suburbs: Fairland (part of), Constantia Kloof North, Allen’s Nek Agricultural Holdings, Panorama Agricultural holdings, Weltevreden Park (part of), Quellerina and Northcliff (Mahogany to King St).

Meanwhile suburbs such as Allen’s Nek, Laser Park, Little Falls, Radiokop, Rietfontein, Ruimsig, Struben’s Valley, Wilgeheuwel, Wilro Park and Zonnehoewen fall in Ward 97 (Ward councillor Jaco Engelbrecht).

Ward 85 councillor Carl Mann said they only learned about the changes a few weeks ago.

“They want to amend the wards and eventually regions. This is more politically motivated as most of the wards in Region B are ruled by Democratic Alliances (DA),” said Mann.

The objection form can be used by any individual or group of residents.

“They are splitting the communities and this will deter the relationship between residents and their councillors,” he complained.

He further explained that residents should utilise the opportunity and thereafter it would be for the Demarcation Board to decide.

“Most residents will be affected. Quellerina will go to Ward 86 and Constantia Kloof (part) will fall in my Ward 89,” explained Ward 89 councillor Ingrid Reinten.

She said the changes will direly impact on residents.

“It will make more sense if they split Little Falls and add it to Ward 89 as we are all on the same side of the mountain and are already a community,” concluded Reinten.

Chairperson of the MDB Jane Thupana briefed the media about the demarcation process on 27 August, in Centurion.

She told the media that proposals constituted 34 cases, affecting 90 municipalities throughout the country, with the exception of the Western Cape.

Thupana said the Board received proposals from the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Pravin Gordhan.

“The Minister requested the Board to consider the determination and re-determination of boundaries of certain municipalities with a view to make them more sustainable and financially viable in terms of section 22(2) of the Municipal Demarcation Act.”
