SAMWU and Rand Water ends dispute

JOBURG – Tensions of a possible Rand Water strike are plugged.

Rand Water (RW) and The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) have successfully concluded the negotiation process about percentage increases of salaries, housing allowances and the incentive bonuses of employees for 2015/2016.

Rand Water spokesperson Justice Mohale said Rand Water was able to continue to provide high quality water to all its consumers.

Rand Water spokesperson Justice Mohale said the process was robust and dynamic but concluded in good faith.

Water and Sanitation committee spokesperson Malatswa Evans Molepo urged both parties to return to the negotiating table on 18 August to ensure the impasse was resolved.

Molepo then said the committee recognises the constitutional right of workers to strike but calls on both parties to devise mitigating plans to ensure the strike does not infringe on the rights of South Africans to access quality water.

Mohale said RW continued to provide high quality portable water to all customers during the dispute.

According to Joburg Water spokesperson David Sibiya, RW had implemented structures in case the strike had taken place in order to avoid services to be affected.

Mohale said on behalf of the board and the executive management, RW thanks all stakeholders for the resolution that enables the entity to continue to pursue its mandate of bulk water service provision.
