Nelson Mandela’s grandson will remain in custody, pending bail application

GREENSIDE – Nelson Mandela’s grandson appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court for a formal bail application.

Nelson Mandela’s grandson, who is accused of rape, appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 21 August for a formal bail application.

He also made a brief appearance in court on 17 August.

The 24-year-old has been in police custody since his arrest on 15 August.

It is alleged that he raped a 15-year-old girl in a toilet, at a restaurant in Greenside on 7 August.

The bail application was not ready to proceed in the morning and was adjourned to 2pm.

During the accused’s bail application, some of the Mandela’s family members came to show their support in court.

According to unconfirmed reports, the accused’s bail application was postponed to 25 August and he will remain in custody until then.
