GALLERY: Westbury Youth Centre honours women

WESTBURY – Women in the community are honoured for the role they play.

The Women’s Day long weekend got off to a festive start at the Westbury Youth Centre. On 7 August a tea was held in honour of the women, and specifically, women teachers, in the community for all their work in supporting, teaching and encouraging children.

Advice referral administrator Bridget Munnik explained the purpose of the day. “As you know it is Women’s Month and we wanted to do something nice for the women of the community,” she said. “We focused on the teachers and seniors in the community as well as the youth on the premises. We also invited Families South Africa and South African National Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence. The Department of Social Development, one of our partners, joined us as well.”

Hostmann – Steinberg donated R2 000 for goodie bags for each of the guests and Women of Vision donated handbags packed with gifts for the women as well. Tracey Dennis, co-director of Mashup, welcomed the women to the event and thanked them for their contribution to the community. Chandré LePan of the Youth Centre recited Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise”, and Val Le Bon of Women of Vision gave thanks to the teachers.

“If I look back on my teachers, they played such an important role in my life,” she said. “It takes a village to raise a child. Since our children spend most of their time at the school, we salute all our teachers. We also wish a happy women’s day to all our mothers and women here today.”

The day ended with the judging for the best hat worn to the event. Doma Louw walked away with the prize.
