City of Joburg is under construction

NEWTOWN – The City of Johannesburg announced the roll-out of an estimated R365-million project to upgrade major highways.

The City of Joburg is hard at work and residents will soon enjoy the benefits.

The Johannesburg Road Agency(JRA) launched their Flagship Bridge programme on 6 August in Newtown and announced the roll-out of an estimated R365-million project to upgrade major highways such as the Soweto Highway, M1 and M2.

About R152 million has been allocated for the construction and rehabilitation of bridges across the City.

The City is also building new bridges such as the Naledi Bridge, which will link communities in Protea North.

The City confirmed that over the next 10 years they will be investing R110 billion into infrastructure upgrades. Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport, Christine Walters said this is an exciting time for the City. However, she pleads with communities to be patient during the construction.

“During this time, work on some of these bridges will result in possible road closure,” she said.

“The City will be communicating which roads are being constructed, and during this time children should not play on the construction sites,” she said.

During the launch, JRA showcased a number of projects in an effort to highlight service delivery success and infrastructural investments.

City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, councillor Mpho Parks Tau informed that a total of R14 billion has been budgeted to improve roads, storm-water infrastructure and bridges in the 2015/2016 financial year.

“The upgrade of our roads infrastructure is part of our efforts to create a better future for our residents where we can link jobs to people and people to jobs,” said Mayor Tau.
