Learners wear slippers for dreams

Victory Park – De La Salle Holy Cross College pupils wear slippers to help sick children achieve their dreams.

Pupils from De La Salle Holy Cross College wore their slippers to school on 3 August. This to pledge their support for children who battle life-threatening illnesses throughout South Africa, as part of the Slipper Day initiative (officially on 7 August).

Pupils Emma Knight and John Maree, who are members of the Johannesburg Junior City Council, spoke about the importance of fulfilling the dreams of children who are sick.

Maree said in light of the previous month being Mandela Month, it was important that people remembered Nelson Mandela’s profound love for children. He added that he was part of the initiative because the youth should realise that not everyone is privileged but that they should lend a helping hand to others.

“Reach for a Dream fulfills dreams of wholeheartedly,” Knight said. “Slipper Day is great, fun and it’s for a good cause.”

Sibongile Khulu from Reach For A Dream Foundation attended the initiative, and said that the foundation was all about fulfilling dreams for children who battle life-threatening illnesses because often their parents are unable to help while paying for hospital bills. “We want to inspire hope and give children a fighting chance,” she said.

She encouraged the public to get involved with the Slipper Day initiative, as all proceeds will go to the Reach For A Dream Foundation.
