COMPETITION: ‘One Man, One Island’ comes to the Barnyard Theatre

CRESTA – Mentalist Michael Abrahamson prepares to amaze audiences on 23 August.

Michael Abrahamson is a mentalist. He is not a psychic or a sorcerer but rather a practitioner of what he calls “Magic of the mind”. “Mentalism is intelligent magic – it’s not just pulling a rabbit out of a hat. It’s more reading people in terms of body language, eye movement, psychological suggestion, memory and mathematics all combined,” he explained.

He is one of three mentalists in South Africa and there’s nobody he can learn from as the other two are much younger than him. As to how his career as a mentalist came about, he explained, “In the late 1990s a mentalist came out from America and I didn’t know what I was watching, but I knew I wanted to do it. I did research, I bought books and DVDs from overseas, I slowly started putting a show together. I got agents involved who would book me for corporate events and fundraisers and eventually built up a name for myself so I can communicate with mentalists overseas.”

He has since developed his craft to include corporate and stage shows, study and memory courses for students. He insists he never uses stooges in his shows as this would shred his credibility. He is adamant that anyone can stop him in the street and he can perform on the spot. “I can pass a solid object through my body in front of them. I don’t need to be in a stage environment to show what I can do.”

To see what he can do, audiences can watch Abrahamson perform One man, One Island at the Barnyard Theatre on 23 August.

Tickets are available from the theatre directly.
