If you can’t leave your office, but would like to do something special for Mandela Day, you need only spend a few minutes in Childline Gauteng’s Memory Store. From as little as R30 up to R300, you can buy a child a priceless memory to carry in their heart for a lifetime.
In a funky little online store, browse a selection of memories that spark a bit of nostalgia, choose a memory and ‘buy it’ by making a small donation, then share the memories you’ve bought with your family and friends, and hopefully they’ll be inspired to donate too.
“Your donation will help us to carry out the work we do,” said assistant director at Childline Gauteng, Annette Brokensha.
“As well as free telephone counselling for children and families 24/7.”
Brokensha further added that they offer a range of support services such as face-to-face counselling, awareness programmes in schools, training on children’s issues, and leadership programmes.
“We have an emergency shelter in Parktown called the Sunlight Safe House,” said Brokensha.
“It’s an after-hours place of safety for vulnerable children, and was born from a partnership between Childline Gauteng, the Child Protection Unit of the South African Police Service, and the Department of Social Development and Child Welfare.”
The Sunlight Safe House has provided care for around 6 000 children since its inception in 1997.
In 2002, they expanded their services to provide foster care.
“We currently have 163 children in long-term foster care with Safe House families, under the Childline Gauteng umbrella,” said Brokensha. “With this Memory Store campaign, we hope to be able to provide these kids with an opportunity to experience lasting, happy memories of their own.”
