MTN strike finally over

FAIRLAND – The eight-week long MTN strike has finally come to an end.

The MTN strike has finally come to an end.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) announced at a press conference on 17 July in Braamfontein, that it had reached an agreement with the company.

In May, hundreds of MTN employees on 14th Avenue had a number of demands which saw them down tools for eight weeks.

The strikers, who varied from call-centre agents to technicians, were demanding a 10 per cent salary increase and 16 per cent bonus.

According to the CWU, workers will receive 12 per cent bonus payments, while casual workers will be converted to permanent.

The union said they will conclude salary increases within 30 days.

“Yes, the strike is over,” confirmed chief human resources officer at MTN South Africa, Themba Nyathi.

“MTN is relieved that customer disruptions would end,” Nyathi said.

When asked if workers will now earn what they demanded, Nyathi said, “MTN policies as adopted by the Board have been implemented. MTN staff already earn higher wages.”

On whether casual workers will receive permanent contracts, Nyathi said MTN will follow the law and not union demands.
