VIDEO: Gilroy’s is the best in the West

MULDERSDRIFT – Gilroy's Country Brewery and Restaurant wins top award at the West Rand Tourism Awards.

Great food, a festive vibe, live entertainment and one of a kind craft beer is what makes Gilroy’s Country Brewery and Restaurant  an award winning establishment.

At the 8th West Rand Tourism (WRT) Awards held at Silverstar Casino on 29 June, Gilroy’s Country Brewery and Restaurant proved this, racking up several awards including the Gold Leisure Experience Award, the Silver Al Fresco Restaurant Award and the big one, the Best Tourism Establishment in the West Rand.

Owner Steve Gilroy said, “I wasn’t expecting it, I thought we’d never win. I tend to get a little demonstrative so I was bouncing off the walls and I am still wagging both tails.”

Steve describes Gilroy’s as a jigsaw made up of different pieces and when all the pieces come together, success is the sum of all the parts and the crazy old fellow in the front.

Steve who is an engineer by trade and a self-taught brewer, started Gilroy’s as a brewery in Roodepoort in 2000 and in 2008 opened Gilroy’s Country Brewery and Restaurant at Ngwenya Glass Village in Muldersdrift.

Gilroy’s is no stranger to winning awards – in 2010 the brewery was announced as the overall winner for Tourism Experience at the WRT Awards and won the Telegraph’s Best of British competition in 2012.

Steve and his team are not stopping here, they aim to win the national Lilizela Tourism Awards. “They can’t ignore me now,” exclaimed Steve.

He also plans to expand the Gilroy’s brand by becoming more involved with the bottle stores. “It’s time we claim our piece of the craft beer market back,” he said excitedly.

Gilroy’s beers are very popular with local and international patrons who come out in droves over the weekend for the beer experience and tasting. And you know it has to be the finest if James Bond orders a Gilroy Dark Ale, as written in the James Bond novel ‘Carte Blanche’ by Jeffery Deaver.
