No time for crime

NEWLANDS – Identifying danger and bullying were just some of the topics covered during an anti-crime talk.

Children at SAVF’s (Suid-Afrikaanse Vroue-Federasie) day-care facility in Newlands have been participating in a three-day programme from 6 to 8 July under the theme, anti-crime.

The discussions and presentations began on Monday 6 July, where an ex-convict from the community shared his experiences of being in jail, coming out and turning his life around.

On 8 July, Nicholas Njoku from the City of Joburg’s Social Development Department talked to the children about human trafficking. Around 20 million people are trafficked into slavery globally.

“Child trafficking is modern slavery. People will lure you with certain promises of education and job opportunities in other countries, only to have you sold into slavery with no way out,” Njoku warned.

Njoku said there are legal and alternate ways of seeking opportunities in other parts of the world. He advised children to always ask a parent or guardian to check the legitimacy of such promises.

Honey Reyneke from SAVF said the children took part in different fun activities centred on the anti-crime theme, including making gift bags with their own anti-crime slogans. On 7 July, a captain from Sophiatown Police Station gave an informative talk on the consequences of getting into crime, stranger danger and bullying.

“The children also learned how to react in dangerous situations. They did an obstacle course which related to how obstacles in life can lead to them resorting to crime,” Heyneke said.
