Motorist attacked outside MTN during strike

FAIRLAND– MTN strike turns violent for an innocent motorist.

A male motorist was attacked after being pulled out of his car when driving on 14th Avenue near MTN South Africa on 22 June.

Reports surfaced on the ‘I Love Fairland’ Facebook page, a member posted on the group, warning residents to avoid the area. Fairland SAPS have confirmed that a case was opened on 22 June after 4pm.

The alleged victim said on the Facebook post, “Please all residents in the area avoid MTN on 14th Ave I was attacked pulled from my vehicle and beaten up and my vehicle vandalised .Thank heaven for Metro Police who saved me.”

Fairland SAPS spokesperson Constable Michael Kgatla said, “A female suspect has been arrested in connection with the crime. She has been charged with common assault, public violence and malicious damage to property.”

Const Kgatla added, “The incident occurred while the male victim was driving on 14th Avenue during the strike yesterday.” MTN South Africa head office, which is based in Fairland on 14th Avenue, has had frequent strikes since the beginning of May this year.

Further to this, the company had decided to postpone their marathon race that was scheduled for 14 June. MTN postpones marathon race.

The Fairland SAPS, which is the closest police station, was questioned with regards to public safety in this area. Const Kgatla commented, “We are constantly monitoring the situation.”

Motorists’ safety was also called into account, where he stated, “The police are there every day. We are trying to remove the strikers from the road to ensure that they cannot disturb the public who are driving.”
