Stars in their eyes

The Thabo September Foundation launches an exciting new soccer academy for primary school kids in Melville.

IMpossible and the Thabo September Foundation launched the Foundation School Academy at Sparrow Schools’ Foundation School in Melville on 6 June. PSL player Thabo September (32) was there to welcome and inspire the children and their parents, as well as the coaches and teachers. The crisp winter morning was filled with an inter-house round robin tournament between the Cheetahs, the Leopards, and the Jaguars, with vocal support supplied from the sidelines by the parents.

“Our plan is to work with primary schools, especially those with challenges, and get the kids involved in an active life, which will help them academically,” said September. “We will be opening more soccer academies at more primary schools, with the view to forming a soccer league, for the schools to play against each other. Currently, we will supply Sparrow Schools’ Foundation School with two coaches who will visit the school twice a week, to train the existing coaches. The Thabo September Foundation is reliant on financial backing from corporates, local businesses, and individuals to reach its goals.”

Sparrow Schools opened its doors 25 years ago when founder Jackie Gallagher was approached to educate children and youth with learning disabilities from disadvantaged communities. Through comprehensive education, vocational skills training, and intensive learner support initiatives, these youngsters are equipped to become income generators and productive members of society. The organisation comprises the Foundation School for Grades 1 to 7, a Combined School for Grades 8 and 9, and a FET College.
