Empowerment programme underway

NEWTOWN – The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Mpho Parks Tau says the new youth development programme Vulindlel 'eJozi will provide opportunities.

Youth empowerment programme, Vulindlel’ eJozi officially launched on 1 June

As outlined in the State of the Nation Address, the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Mpho Parks Tau says the new initiative will be able to open doors of opportunities to the youth.

“It made sense to convene this briefing on the first day of June, which marks the beginning of the official Youth Month commemorations in South Africa,” said Mayor Tau, during the launch in Newtown.

Mayor Tau said the majority of people who live in Johannesburg are under the age of 35.

“We are one of the youngest parts of this young nation, and it’s most dynamic. It is our task as a city committed to innovation and transformation to enable the space for such leadership,” he said.

The Vulindlel’eJozi programme, aims to break down barriers to opportunities for 200 000 young people in this City.

“The economic and social participation of youth has become a defining challenge of our age – in South Africa, as well as globally.

“Young people, and those who care about their empowerment – and that should really be all of us – will not benefit from government, business and civil society collectively indulging in a culture of lamentation.

“We owe this young country – a 21 year old democracy in which the majority of people are scarcely older – the full measure of our commitment to enabling those who must carry our new society forward,” Mayor Tau said.

Tau also said the youth should be ready for all new opportunities.

“We call for a generation of young Joburgers with their hands-up, ready not just to work towards new job opportunities, but to start new businesses, complete new courses of training and create a million new kinds of social and economic value. This will raise the bar not just for young residents of Joburg, but for young residents of the republic as a whole,” he said.
