Local actor to climb Africa’s highest peak

FERNDALE – Isidingo actor will climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Trek4Mandela.

Jack Devnarain, a local actor , will climb Mount Kilimanjaro along with 27 other people to raise funds for Trek4Mandela and the ‘Keeping a Girl Child in School’ initiative, in July this year.

“The purpose of this is to raise funds for the young women, who do not have access to sanitary pads or cannot afford it,” explained the actor for Isidingo, an SABC show.

According to Devnarain, about 50 school days per year is lost to young girls in South Africa because they do not have proper sanitary wear. He added that he felt there was a definite need to take on the challenge for a cause that is having such a huge impact on our future business women, sports stars, and leaders of this country.

“I have had to change the way I train to get ready for the climb. I have put a lot of endurance training, running and climbing into my regiment,” says Devnarain. Being an ex-power lifter, he said that he has also added some power lifting techniques into his training.

He explained that the Trek4Mandela is not just a once off initiative, the young girls will be sustained and sponsored throughout the year with sanitary wear.

Devnarain asks the community to help raise funds and donate a pack of sanitary wear, by pledging R30 via SMS.

Details: SMS ‘Jack’ to 42513.
