Street corner concerns

EMMARENTIA – Ward Councilor Pat Richards is voicing the community's concerns about a dangerous road crossing in Emmarentia.

The community of Emmarentia has become concerned about a road crossing on the corner of Komatie Street and Greenhill Road.

Motorists have not been making correct use of the crossing, and this has left Ward 88 Councillor Patrica Richards alarmed at the potential dangers this crossing could cause to passing pedestrians and motorists. “We’ve been asking the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to do something about this issue for the last five years,” she said.

Richards pointed out that the JRA responded to this issue by providing angled parking space along Greenhill Road. The angled parking along Greenhill Road has caused a limited line of vision for motorist attempting to turn from Komatie Street. The JRA also provided a stop street at the crossing of Komatie Street and Greenhill Road, but the signage is largely ignored by passing motorists.

She revealed that the community requested a four-way stop street as a solution to this issue. “A four-way stop that has clearly marked stopping lines on the roads would ensure that motorist cross safely and securely,” she said.

According to JRA, there are complications to installing a four-way stop. “The JRA have told us that installing a four-way stop crossing would only cause a build of traffic. Admittedly, there is a lot of traffic crossing over roads every day but at least these stop signs can help regulate the flow of it in much safer way,” she concluded.
