Egoli Gas’ natural gas pipeline underway

FAIRLAND – The new R65-million gas pipeline that Egoli Gas is building will be beneficial to both residential and commercial customers as from January 2016.

Johannesburg residents will soon enjoy the benefits of natural gas reticulator Egoli Gas’ pipeline.

Last year, Egoli Gas launched a groundbreaking initiative which will see households connect to a new R65-million gas pipeline that Egoli Gas is building.

The pipeline will run from Sasol’s pressure-reducing station in Robertsville to MTN’s 14th Avenue Campus in Fairland. The aim of the orange 630mm in diameter, high-density polyethylene pipe will initially deliver 1.5 million gigajoules a year of natural gas imported from Mozambique by Sasol and a full capacity will be able to deliver 2.5 million gigajoules yearly.

Suburbs within a kilometre radius of the pipeline, including Florida, will be able to connect to the line.

Big Projects Development Manager André van der Colff said drilling equipment to site and drilling has started on 11 May.

“Apart from drilling underneath the two highways, Ontdekkers Road and 14th Avenue, only 920m is left to complete pipe installation,” he said.

Van der Colff also confirmed, “The initial gas offtake from the line to MTN will commence in November and until then, no other off-takers will be signed on.”

Van der Colff also stated that the pipeline will be beneficial to both residential as well as commercial customers as from January 2016.
