GALLERY: SAB World of Beer turns 20

NEWTOWN – World of Beer turns 20 in Newtown.

The SAB World of Beer celebrated 20 years of success at their premises in the Newtown Cultural Precinct on 15 May.

World of Beer hosted a gala event where guests and staff were able to enjoy some amazing food and, of course, an array of drinks, courtesy of South African Brewery (SAB). Retired manager of World of Beer, Frank Johnson spoke on the long and colourful history of the tourist attraction. “The World of Beer came into being in 1995, an iconic year in South Africa’s history. The company opened what was then known as the Centenary Centre – a museum designed to showcase the history of South African beer. It was one of the first major investments made in the Newtown Cultural Precinct, ultimately paving the way for future developments in the area.”

The tour documents a friendly and informative insight into the history and culture of beer – from its ancient origins to its European ancestry; its African heritage, as well as its role in South Africa’s story – past, present and future. It also takes guests through the interesting process of brewing, including the artful selection of hops and barley.

Master of Ceremonies for the evening Talk Radio 702 presenter, David O’ Sillivan said, “I am incredibly privileged to be speaking at this event. It is great to see that South Africa has a truly home-grown tourist attraction, which showcases the best of our beers.”
