Water pollution a concern

MONTGOMERY PARK – A Montgomery Park resident has seen water pollution which she has called on authorities to solve.

The stream running below Magalies Complex on Montpark Drive in Montgomery Park is allegedly polluted and a cause for concern.

According to resident Maynie Krause the stream has been polluted for about two weeks.

“Not only is the stream unsightly but there is also a very strong and unpleasant smell coming from the polluted water,” she said.

Krause first noticed this on her walks around the suburb.

According to the Rand Water website, everything that happens in a catchment area is reflected in the quality of the water that flows through it, because the results of human activity and lifestyle ultimately end up in rivers, through runoff.

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck said water pollution is a big problem in Johannesburg.

“Every single waterway is polluted. Some are more polluted than others. Our infrastructure is terrible and has not been upgraded for a long time,” he said.

According to Truluck, the City has to find the source of the problem to develop solutions.

“People must report any such issues to their Ward councillors so that they may begin the process to ensure it is resolved,” he said.
