GALLERY: Community’s successful silent statement

ALBERTVILLE – Residents of Albertville have been making their voices heard against social issues and poor service delivery in their area.

Residents from Albertville were involved in a silent protest that ran for two months, highlighting social issues.

The aim of the protest was to speak out against poor service delivery and social issues in their area. This situation came about as the residents have grown more and more weary of the rate of crime, illegal dumping and speeding in Albertville.

Resident and organiser of the protest Neels Jordaan spoke about what the results of the protest were. “There have been a number of concerns that we wanted to deal with during this protest. Speeding has been the biggest issue in the area, more specifically in Albert Street. Other concerns were poor service delivery and illegal dumping. With these protest signs we have raised awareness among residents and visitors alike,” he said

Jordaan explained that there were four petitions sent out to the community – “232 residents in our neighborhood came together and signed the petitions. The amount of support we have received has been amazing. Each person in our area had an opportunity to have their say and make a statement with signage posted outside their homes,” he said.

He also pointed out that Pikitup has been very helpful in providing ‘no dumping’ signs for particular problematic areas.

Ward 89 councillor Steve Kotzé was pleased with the community support and signage posted in the streets.”It has been a fantastic initiative on the part of the community. With this peaceful demonstration we have shown the larger community that we care about the wellbeing of our neighborhood,” he said.
