Park’s waste woes

AUCKLAND PARK – Residents have been requesting refuse bins at Sir William Dalrymple Park to no avail.

Numerous requests have been made by residents for the installation of refuse bins at Sir William Dalrymple Park in Auckland Park.

Resident Sasha Wales-Smith has been trying since January to obtain refuse bins for the park. She stated that a number of requests have been sent through to Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, but the refuse bins still have not been installed.

Wales-Smith explained that regardless of the regular cleaning and pick-up, there should still be refuse bins made available for the community to use. “It is important that the park should serve as a place of recreation for the community. People utilise the park often, and garbage tends to crop up regularly. Refuse bins should be provided,”she said.

Ward 69 Councillor Katja Naumann was not impressed with the lack of response from City Parks. “The residents of Johannesburg pay steep rates and taxes and are entitled to expect at least some basic services such as refuse removal in return. It is an outrage, that after five months of frequent requests, City Parks has still not been able to provide three refuse bins in Sir William Dalrymple Park,” she said.

Spokesperson for City Parks Jenny Moodley reassured the community that the park is being kept clean by City Parks and that the requested bins would be provided in due time.
