Suspected car thieves out on bail

PARKVIEW - The suspects are out on R1 000 bail each and are due to reappear in the same court on 19 May.

Three suspected VW Polo thieves appeared in the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court recently facing charges of possession of suspected stolen properties.

The suspects are out on R1 000 bail each and are due to reappear in the same court on 19 May.

“We believe their arrest will go a long way into solving the prevalence of vehicle-related crimes in the area,” said Parkview Police spokesperson Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha.

The suspects, aged between 24 and 37, were arrested and detained following a car chase that resulted in the suspects losing control of their vehicle on 1 April.

According to Sgt Ramovha, Parkview Police received a tip-off from informants about a suspicious vehicle roaming the streets of Parkhurst – upon responding the said vehicle could not be located.

“On the same day at about 1pm the police, while on patrol, came across a vehicle fitting the description of the reported incident with three occupants,” said Ramovha.

Officers ordered it to pull over but the driver drove off at high speed, prompting a chase by the police.

“The vehicle was being driven recklessly and negligently disregarding red traffic lights along Beyers Naudé, effectively endangering innocent lives,” he said.

The driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle on the corner of Beyers Naudé Drive and West Park Road, crashing into a pavement.

According to Sgt Ramovha, this resulted in a search and officers discovered various suspected stolen valuables including several loose VW Polo computer boxes and a set of registration plates which were established to be false.
