Earthquakes have been around since the beginning of time, and is a natural process by which the Earth releases pressure as tectonic plates collide with each other.
South Africa has had its share of tremors, but nowhere near to the scale of devastation suffered in countries like Indonesia, China and Pakistan.
The most destructive earthquake in South African history, took place in 1969 in the Tulbach area located in the Western Cape. The quake measured 6.3 on the Richter scale.
More recently, a light earthquake hit certain areas of Johannesburg on Saturday morning, 25 Aril 2015 and measured 2.5 on the Richter scale. Local residents took to social media platforms, and it would seem as if the south-west of the city in areas such as Soweto, felt it the most.
South Africa also experienced a 5.2 magnitude earthquake on 5 August 2014 with the epicentre near Orkney in the North West province. Aftershocks could be felt in places as far as Cape Town.
