No more queuing for school registrations

JOBURG – Parents registering their children in public schools no longer have to camp out for registrations.

Hundreds of parents recently camped outside schools for more than two days for the 2016 academic year registrations, which opened on 21 April.

However, that can now be a thing of the past.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi launched the new online application system, that will allow parents enrolling their children at public schools in Gauteng to no longer have to wait in long queues.

Parents can now apply to government schools using their smartphones or by clicking on a link on the Department of Education’s website www.gdeadmissions.gov.za

By clicking on the website, parents will be able to view all schools in their area of work or residence.

The savvy application process will also allow parents to check the status of their application and receive e-mail or SMS notification on the status of their application.

The Department’s spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane encouraged the parents to use their smartphones for the online application.

“Parents can expect to spend less time queuing, as the admissions process will cater for online users as well,” Sekhonyane said.

She also said parents who do not have access to the internet are still welcome to apply in person at schools.

DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Education Khume Ramulifho said the online registration will enable parents to save time.

“While walk-ins are still welcomed, the online application process eliminates administration on the part of parents and school staff and saves time thus increasing efficiency,” said Ramulifho.

The school registrations closes on 26 May.
