Kerbside chaos

MELVILLE – Naming mistakes on various kerbsides in Melville have been reported.

Residents of Melville have been left in a state of confusion and bemusement after numerous street kerbs have been repainted and in the process, misspelled.

Various street kerbs on 1st Avenue were wrongly painted ‘1’ or ‘1 Ave’, while street kerbs on 2nd and 3rd avenues were painted ‘2th Ave’ and ‘3th Ave’.

Ward 87 councillor Amanda Forsythe was delighted to find that the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has done maintenance work in the area, but was disappointed to find the slew of spelling mistakes.

“We were thrilled to find the JRA repainting our kerb stones with street names, but unfortunately, some rather amusing errors have been made causing much hilarity in the neighbourhood. As funny as it may be, it is also a little sad that street names are not properly verified and the work of those painting the names is not checked. I have notified the JRA of this mistake and hope that they will be returning soon to rectify these mistakes,” she said.

Local resident Deon de Lange was also amused at the sight of the newly repainted street kerbs. “I have to admit, I was surprised to discover the ‘uniquely’ named street kerbs. It’s a pity that correct spelling couldn’t go along with the maintenance work done,” he said.

Community members also took to the I Love Melville Facebook group to voice their concerns and opinions about the recent repainting confusion.

JRA representative Mosa Makhalima was contacted on 22 April, and promised a response shortly. Comment is still awaited.
