Over R200 000 raised for charity

RANDBURG – The Randburg Horticultural Society says gardening is the perfect antidote to the modern world as it helps reclaim intangible things people have lost in their busy lives.

Seven garden clubs around the Johannesburg northern suburbs make things grow in more ways than one.

Over the past 18 years, members of the All Seasons Garden Club, the Bedfordview Garden Club, the Country Garden Club, the Johannesburg Garden Club , the Randburg Horticultural Society , the Thirty Something Garden Club and the The Horticultural Society have raised millions for charity through their inspirational Gardens of the Golden City project.

Other charities have benefitted from proceeds from the various tea gardens.

A sum of R224 000 was recently given to three lucky beneficiaries of the latest open gardens, according to Jacci Babich of the Randburg Horticultural Society.

“Success breeds success,” said a delighted Lynne Ludolph, convenor of Gardens of the Golden City.

“I can’t thank everyone enough, from garden owners to organisers and the visitors who thronged to see the gardens.”

Geoff Lockwood of Birdlife South Africa gave special thanks to Christopher and Susan Greig of Hyde Park for opening their glorious garden, Beechwood.

The four-day event, which included a superb luncheon by Greig and teas organised by the Sandton Rotary Club, raised R50 000 for the organisation.

“It’s a wonderful happening. As good and as powerful as the 250 white storks that have just taken off from Delta Park on their 8 000 mile journey to their European breeding grounds. Our job at Birdlife South Africa does not stop at our borders. Mentoring our neighbours is also a very important function.”

Jane Henry was visibly moved on receiving R58 000 for her Lambano Orphan Sanctuary and Hospice.

Lambano cares for 28 children – orphaned or abandoned at birth.
