Flames at Roosevelt substation

ROOSEVELT PARK – A Big bang causes flames at Roosevelt substation.

A fire erupted at the Roosevelt Park City Power substation on 20 April at 9.35am.

Residents in the area said they heard a loud bang resounding from the substation.

According to Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Nana Radebe, Roosevelt Fire Station staff heard the very same loud bang coming from the neighbouring Roosevelt Park substation.

Firefighters attended to the call and were lucky to gain entry as City Power workers were on scene.

“On arrival at the substation, the firefighters found the main transformer in flames,” said Radebe.

The fire was extinguished an hour after the call was received.

“There have been no injuries reported. We are dampening the scene to ensure that the fire does not reignite,” added Radebe.

“City Power Roosevelt substation has been isolated due to an emergency situation. Technicians are still investigating the cause of the fire which has caused power interruptions to a number of areas in the north of Johannesburg,” said City Power spokesperson Sol Masolo.
