Peaceful, but not silent

ALBERTVILLE – The Upper Albertville Resident's Community will be organising a silent protest in order to address social issues.

The Upper Albertville Residents Community are planning to engage in a silent protest on 22 April in order to speak out against poor service delivery and social issues in their area. This situation came about as the residents have grown more and more weary of the rate of crime, illegal dumping and speeding in Albertville.

Four petitions were drawn up for the planned protest, all dealing with the various social issues. The first petition dealt with blocking off the road before PikItUp entrance, but after the last residential house in Albert Street. This was done to stop the influx of traffic that speeds along that road. The second petition dealt with the placement of speed humps in Grens and Albert streets in order to slow down traffic.

The third petition dealt with the placement of appropriate signage that makes the Parks Board responsible for replacing stolen fencing at the Melville Koppies West. The fourth and final petition dealt with hampering dumping on open grounds in the Albertville area.

The petitions were handed over by Ward 86 councillor Steve Kotzé on Thursday 5 March in an effort to get the community’s voices heard. “We have been struggling with these concerns for a while now. I really believe that this upcoming silent protest will act as a powerful opportunity for the community to come together and make their voices heard,” he said.

Residents have been asked to place placards or posters in front of their homes to highlight one of the issues mentioned in the community’s petitions.
