Two injured during bus shooting

NEWLANDS – A Metro bus driver and one passenger have been shot during a robbery.

A bus driver is in a serious condition after he was shot on Ontdekkers Road in Newlands, west of Johannesburg on 1 April.

“Paramedics from ER24 were called to the scene shortly before 6am where they found the bus on the side of the road near the Mollie Street intersection,” said ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak.

Upon assessment, the paramedics found the driver of the bus, believed to be in his ’50s, with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Another person, believed to be a passenger on the bus, was found with a graze wound on his abdomen.

“The driver of the bus explained that an unknown number of suspects entered the bus as he stopped near the Mollie Street bus stop and opened fire into the bus.”

The bus had several passengers on board at the time. No one else was injured in this incident.

The injured men were transported by ER24 and Johannesburg EMS to Flora Clinic for further treatment.

The local police were contacted to the scene. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet known.
