Crime issues in Sector 2

HONEYDEW – Drug dealing, drunken driving and illegal taxi ranks pervade Honeydew Sector 2.

There were many incidents of crime in Honeydew Sector 2 in the last month. This was revealed at the sector’s monthly Community Policing Forum meeting at the Honeydew Police Station on 26 March. The meeting was attended by representatives of the forum, police, Metro Police, security companies, resident associations and residents themselves.

The forum’s chairperson Neville Burnett said he had received complaints about drug dealing at two shopping centres in the sector and in various parks. Metro Police sergeants Thuli Mokone and Abel Mahloko said that they will follow up on this. The two sergeants also reported that, during an operation in the Honeydew Precinct between 13 February and 21 March, Metro Police arrested 42 people for driving under the influence.

Allan Baudry of Londoloza reported on an incident in Weltevreden Park, during which a resident was hit on the back of the head with a brick after taking his dustbin outside – and woke up later to find his golden chain stolen. Honeydew Community Policing Forum public relations officer Jon Rosenberg brought attention to a wetland near Haak-en-Steek Street, Weltevreden Park, which criminals were taking advantage of to commit crime in the area.

Honeydew Sector 2 manager Sergeant Nicholas Makhura responded that the wetland is “huge”, and a great deal of manpower will be needed to attend to the issue. Other issues that were highlighted included illegal taxi ranks, taxis driving in the wrong lane, vagrants, hawkers, and loitering. Areas in the sector include Allen’s Nek, Constantia, Devon Valley, Panorama, parts of Randpark Ridge, and Weltevreden Park.
