Stop street danger

WESTDENE – A stop street sign on the corner of Aberdeen and Lancaster streets is creating safety concerns for residents and business owners of Westdene.

Residents and business owners of Westdene have recently expressed their concerns surrounding risky driving practices from motorists at a stop street sign on the corner on Aberdeen and Lancaster streets.

According to part-owner of Linda’s Bake and Pack Shop Chris Reyneke, motorists treat the stop street sign with little respect. “There is always a lot of traffic in the mornings and in the late afternoons. Most motorists do not respect the rules of the road and take risky chances constantly. A lot of university students make use of this street and it’s a miracle that nobody hasn’t been hurt yet,” he said.

Estate agent at Ann Rault Properties, Jeanne Day was also very worried about the dangers that were caused by reckless motorists at the stop street sign. “There is an appeal to motorist to please obey the rules of the road and stop at the stop street sign. People should see how busy this intersection gets in the morning and in the afternoon, it can be quite dangerous. Motorists should refrain from crossing the road recklessly; if ignored, it will undoubtedly lead to possible accidents,” she said.

Caretaker and admin assistant at the Campus View Apartments Erna Wewege was worried about pedestrians and commuting students, who frequent the road, will end up getting hurt if motorists ignore the stop street sign. “We constantly hear brakes screeching. It’s becoming a huge problem,” she said.

Reyneke pointed out that by changing the corner to a four way stop would serve as a step in the right direction.
