EMMARENTIA – Pavement havoc after sewage leak was repaired over 15 months ago.

Left-over pavement work from a sewage leak is causing major obstruction near flats on Levubu Road in Emmarentia.

Resident of Rose View flats Hector Macrae explained how the situation started. “There was a sewage blockage about two years ago.”

He continued that Joburg Water came to inspect the problem and, in doing so, dug up numerous areas in order to pin point the leak. The sewage leak was then finally fixed. However, the job was not completed. The holes and dug up pavements are still in a state of disaster – and this is where the problem arises, according to Macrae.

JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers stated, “The reinstatement of the pavement and the road is known to us. The JRA regional team has placed the defects on a programme to work with entities such as Joburg Water to clear the reinstatements backlog in the region. This programme has proven very successful thus far.”

Residents of flats near the area struggle to gain entry to their parking lot as one dug up area is in the middle of the driveway. Ward 88 councillor Pat Richards was on scene to address the matter. “The pavements and digging sites have been like this for 15 months. We have contacted the relevant entities on numerous occasions with no success,” said Richard.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) works in conjunction with Joburg Water in order to restore sites to normal after a repair has been completed. Scheepers explained, “We understand and apologise for the inconvenience to residents, and consequently, this particular defect on Levubu Road will be attended to by 16 March 2015.”
