Cyclists association to launch Commuter Bicycle Map

JOBURG – Commuter cycling route to make cyclists' lives a bit easier.

On 14 March the Johannesburg Urban Cyclists Association (JUCA) will launch a first for the city with the launch of a Johannesburg Commuter Bicycle Map.

The map will show safer, quieter and flat cycling routes through Joburg. It will also show new bicycle lanes built by the City and those that will be constructed over the next year.

According to David du Preez, chairperson of JUCA, the map will also include points of interest such as markets, public swimming pools and parks, and train stations. The aim of the map is to show that it is possible to cycle around Johannesburg, and to encourage people to try cycling as a transport option.

“The map will be distributed for free at tourism agencies, cycling shops, universities, public offices and elsewhere. People can also request a copy of the map through the JUCA website.”

“For a community-based organisation this is a significant milestone. We are very proud of this achievement, and believe that many commuter cyclists – existing and future – will find our map very useful. In the future we hope to develop a mobile digital app based on this map, in order to make it even more accessible.

“The launch will take place at 300 Commisisioner Street at 4pm and everyone is welcome to arrive by bicycle,” concluded Du Preez.
