Mokwena says Khakhu flirted with his girlfriend

WESTBURY – Some details of the day Luke Tibbetts was shot dead as he sat on his mother’s lap in Westbury have been revealed.

Further details on the man accused of the murder of three-year-old Luke Tibbetts emerged at the Johannesburg High Court sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court on 9 March.

Prosecutor Deon van Wyk showed the court CCTV footage of a scene outside the G-Spot shebeen in Westbury on 2 August last year around 6pm, where Keenan Mokwena and Lindray Khakhu had a run-in as the accused, Khakhu showed State witness Mokwena the middle finger.

Mokwena told the court that Khakhu followed him to his girlfriend’s house where he further intimidated him shouting “here I am now. I’m coming for you”.

The state witness added that Khakhu had said “Jou lekker ding” (you nice thing) to Mokwena’s then girlfriend who is now his fiancé.

Mokwena, who witnessed the shooting of the toddler, told the court he only pointed a toy gun at the accused to “scare him” and Khakhu opened fire.

The court was also shown pictures from Khakhu’s Facebook page which was last updated in February while he was in custody.

The accused is facing 18 gun-related charges, including the murder of Luke Tibbetts.

He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The state has called various witnesses and said they have more to follow.

“I want things to continue going smoothly until the end of the trial. I would like to thank the witnesses, who have come forward so far, because this will help to make sure he pays for what he did to my son,” said Derrick Petersen, Luke Tibbetts’s dad.

The trial is expected concluded by 27 March.
