Ken Forrester inspires hospitality students

Ken Forrester recently hosted a lecture about the food and wine industry at the School of Tourism and Hospitality at the University of Johannesburg.

Prominent restaurateur and winemaker Ken Forrester recently presented a guest lecture entitled Hotels, Restaurants and Wine: A personal journey at the School of Tourism and Hospitality (STH) at the University of Johannesburg.

Forrester was introduced by director at STH Dr Diane Abrahams who deemed it a great honour to have Forrester present at the school. “We are very excited to have Mr Forrester here with us at the STH. He has truly been an inspirational beacon for students and industry experts in the South African food and wine industry,” she said.

Forrester explained his 40-year-long career from his humble beginnings in Johannesburg, to his current business of running the Ken Forrester Vineyards in the Western Cape. He pointed out that his passion for superior world-class wine has led him to his success.

“I reminded myself throughout my career that I want to make better wine than any other wine company in the world; it was that passion which led me to where I am today,” he said.

Forrester continued to talk about his career of working with business magnet Sol Kerzner and how he learned so much about working with different people.

“The most interesting thing about the food and wine business is that you meet the most interesting people,” he said.

He reminded the students in attendance that life wasn’t always a bed of roses for him, and that you really have to work hard to achieve your goals.

“Nothing is impossible; look at what works and utilise it. Nothing will happen until you make it happen, because opportunity doesn’t simply knock.”

He also stressed the cruciality of family where success is concerned.

Third-year hospitality student Zolene Gates was inspired by Forrester’s words.

“I am completely in awe of Mr Forrester’s achievements and work ethic. I really hope to do the same in my own career someday,” said Gates.
