Blairgowrie road works to finish by mid March

BLAIRGOWRIE – MultiChoice provides reasons why road works were delayed.

MultiChoice has revealed that although road works along Bramfischer Drive, Blairgowrie, have taken longer than expected, they should finish by “latest mid-March”.

The Grove Street closure in Ferndale will afterwards be made open again.

Following a complaint by an anonymous resident about the traffic in Grove Street, the company released a media statement.

“MultiChoice is undertaking the road upgrade on Bram Fischer [Drive] between Grove Street and Republic Road,” it said.

“The upgrades are being done on behalf of the City of Johannesburg as part of bulk contributions required by the City when building developments are undertaken.”

The statement continued that the work, which began in August, was scheduled to be completed in December.

But it was delayed for the following reasons:

  • The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) had a strike in July.
  • There was allegedly a lack of support from City Power, who had to relocate or remove certain services to enable the work to progress.
  • There was “tardiness” in telecommunication companies in relocating their services.
  • The “diabolical” state of the storm water system resulted in old pipes having to be dug up and replaced.

“The contractors responsible for the road works are doing everything possible to make up the time lost and expect to complete the work by latest mid-March 2015, provided no additional surprises are encountered,” the statement concluded. Ward 102 councillor David Potter confirmed that relocation of infrastructure had contributed to the delay.
