Plate of controversy

JOHANNESBURG – City meals are 'ordinary' and 'not expensive'.

The African National Congress (ANC) has responded regarding what has been labelled the City of Johannesburg’s “ostentatious” meals at official meetings.

Chief Whip for the Democratic Alliance (DA) Caucus in Johannesburg, and Kelland resident, Graham de Kock said recently that DA councillors in Johannesburg sometimes do not partake in these meals because they are an “ostentatious use of public money” that could have been “better employed elsewhere.”

Wellington Ntsodo, administrator at the ANC Parliamentary Constituency Office in Bordeaux says that the City of Johannesburg's meals are not expensive.

Wellington Ntsodo, administrator at the ANC Parliamentary Constituency Office in Bordeaux, remarked that meals provided by the City to councillors at meetings are “ordinary” and “not expensive.”

According to Ntsodo, “The DA normally do eat at these meals. They only boycotted once, last year.”

However, Ntsodo refused to guess how much money was probably spent per plate of food at these meals.

De Kock claimed about R300 is spent per plate.
