Earlier this week, Cabinet has been briefed by Eskom about the risk of a total national electricity blackout.
According to national publications, Eskom warned government that, if the system crashed, it would take at least two weeks to reboot.
Eskom sources have also said that a national blackout was a “very significant possibility for the foreseeable future.”
We went around asking residents if they would cope if national blackout was to be implemented for two weeks – and this is what they had to say.
Beth Schimansky: I am not going to cope at all, it would be extremely difficult. And I think business production will come to a halt. We won’t even have fresh food and this will definitely have an impact on the economy.
Mahlomola Baleni: Loadshedding is not that bad, I think we would cope just well without electricity, I would use gas stove to cook and also use candles.Sheila Suter: Should Eskom load shed for two weeks, every day, I think we would adjust, provided they notify us on time. However, it would really be bad for business.Gideon Nieuwoudt: it will be hectic, and business will definitely lose money, we also have children and to take care of them requires electricity.
