Five armed suspects nabbed

EMMARENTIA – Victims of recent muggings at the Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia are urged to come forward urgently to the Parkview Police Station.

Police arrested five suspects aged between 23 and 33 in Emmarentia on 27 January.

These men were arrested for the armed robbery of a 26-year-old female victim at Botanical Gardens. She was threatened with knives and robbed of valuables during the robbery.

Parkview members Constable Magezi Maluleke and Constable Percy Kgatla were on routine patrol when they were called just before 11am to assist at the Botanic Gardens.

According to Parkview Police spokesperson Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha, the constables immediately drove to the scene.

“Upon arrival they found security officers in the company of five suspects and the victim who was allegedly robbed of a cellphone and other valuables at the park while she was walking her dogs,” he said.

The suspects were searched and found to be in possession of knives.

“We appeal to victims of recent muggings at the Botanical Gardens to come forward urgently, for the purpose of an identity parade to enable us to link the suspects with previous cases,” said Ramovha.

The suspects remain in custody at Parkview Police Station and will appear at Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court soon. They will face charges of armed robbery as well as possession of dangerous weapons.

“Residents should consider leaving valuables at home, going in groups and to report any suspicious people they see in the area,” said Ramovha.
