AK47 rifle and ammunition recovered in Parkview

PARKVIEW – A 72-year-old man found an AK47 assault- rifle and ammunition at his new home.

Parkview Police recovered an AK47 assault rifle, two magazines and over 450 live rounds of ammunition at a house in Galway Road RECENTLY.

According to Parkview Police spokesperson Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha, two members of Parkview SAPS were on routine patrol when they received a call summoning them to an address in Parkview.

On arrival, they spoke to the 72-year-old owner of the property that is vacant and undergoing alterations and renovations after he recently acquired it.

The police were then pointed to an AK47 rifle with two magazines and a plastic bag containing over 450 rounds of ammunition.

According to Sgt Ramovha, the owner of the house alleged said items were found in one of the built in-cupboards of the house. “The owner alleged that the items were discovered when renovations were being carried-out, he further alleged it was placed in a manner that suggested it was somehow mysteriously hidden there.”

Sgt Ramovha added that the firearm will be sent to ballistics to check if it has ever been used in any criminal activity.

“We commend the house owner for acting in a responsible manner by alerting the police, as it could have easily ended up in wrong hands. It is a well-known fact that this particular kind of a rifle is a favourite with criminals who mostly commit cash-in-transit heists and business robberies,” he said.

“Considering the high number of firearms-related crimes in the country. We appeal to community members who own firearms to look after them or consider surrendering them to any nearest police station as they may end-up in wrong hands placing innocent lives at risk,” he concluded.
